Newcastle harbors a growing number of secret delights, and The Edwards is a great example. This is no ordinary bar: it’s the heart of a vibrant, creative community blooming in the awesome post-industrial architecture of Newcastle’s West End. Its proof of what happens when flair for reinvention meets a commitment to freewheeling good times

Owners Chris Joannou and Chris Johnston have dedicated themselves to creating a shared space that provides a superbly designed environment offering good hearty food, a great café culture that is all anchored by a stunning raw concrete bar at its heart. The industrial chic space began its life as a Laundromat before becoming the hip bar scene that it is today, with beautiful cues from its heritage such as the steam press beer taps and gas tumbler lighting.

Sweet smoke scents the air from the kitchens wood fired oven, you can sit and eat with friends in a communal scene that is in keeping with the working roots of this town. The Edwards cafe is proudly pouring coffee from our local roasting house Suspension Espresso and our breakfast, lunch and dinner has a conscious measure toward sourcing seasonal produce from local suppliers and maintaining a strong knowledge of the origin of our produce.

On the flip side, if it's not a meal you are after, perhaps you have just finished work, meeting with friends or perched up on a bar stool and are looking for something to take the edge off or nibble on over a drink – we get it. The Edwards bar is fueled by classic cocktails, a carefully selected wine menu and a non-stop supply of Newtown’s Young Henry’s, Murrays Brewing, Brooklyn Lager and other cracking craft beers rotating on our taps. And if you need something to chew while you're sipping your brew our wood and fire and smoke inspired bar bits are served up from 4pm everyday.

the shop

At it’s core, the shop is an awesome, old school record store run by vinyl veteran Chris “Dunny” Dunn, who you may have met if you ever ventured into Sydney’s infamous Waterfront records on any given day during the 90s

The Culture shop stocks an array of pop culture items, prints, books, movies, art and clothes including exclusive and limited edition items.  It has a special place in its heart for Newcastle designed & made and actively encourages collaborations with local artists.

Of the stock currently filling the shelves and record boxes, Chris Dunn assures us that what you see is only the beginning!  “This store is for the people and what we stock will be dictated largely by the the consumer.  if there is something that you are after, just ask me to get it in and I will, doesn’t matter how weird, over or underground it is.  If you want Miley Cyrus on vinyl, we will get it in!”

*NOTE When asked to prove his wild statement regarding Miley Cyrus on vinyl, Dunny soon discovered that he can’t in-fact source such a thing.  Sorry Miley fans!

The Coin-Op is a fully functional, fully self service Coin-operated Laundromat with shiny, new, industrial size washers and dryers.  The coin-op has already hosted a number of christmas parties over the festive season as well housing a pop-up record store, pop-up bare knuckle barber and an intimate music gig.

The Edwards is a great place to have a beer and burger in the sun and enjoy a spot of people watching while your washing spins away .  It is open 7am till 10pm most days (Monday morning opening time can be a bit sketchy) and there is always plenty of parking. We are open to people using the space for events or happenings. Of course, it is also the best place in town to clean your clothes and sundry.

Leave your laundry with us and we will make it all better.  The Laundrette offers a full range of professional laundry services including fluff & fold, business shirts,  blankets, doonas, underlays, ironing & bed linen.
Our fluff & fold service is done by weight, pop it on our scales and we can tell you up front the price.

Run by Sue and David “The Shirtmaster” Joannou, these guys were the the first in Newcastle to have an automated shirt machine and are now the proud owners of a brand new, top of the range, Italian shirt machine. David first started to perfect his skills of washing and ironing business shirts back in 2000, now with over a decade of experience his finished product is the best in the business. Our process is to wash & steam, NO harsh drying, NO creases in those sleeves, giving a longer life to your shirts.  Our shirt machine has an overhead vacuum that captures excess steam and recycles it back into the process which lessens our energy usage.

In the converted warehouses that surround The Edwards are galleries and creative studios, dance and design academies, and with it the evidence that Newcastle is the site of a bold new energy.

The Edwards is determinedly supportive of the local arts and music scene, we host an artist in residence program as well as other great events and exhibitions in our creative space. We try and retain a constant connection with the community and stimulate conversations around the local creative industries and the arts and have big plans to expand this role of support within the creative community.
