A Wild Abandon: Awaken The Bear - Exhibition

Friday 29th of September

We are heading into the remote wilderness of Canada and America

Join us on Friday 29 Sept for a night of art, adventure, nature + beer. Journey into the remote North American wilderness through the illustrations, images and words of Newcastle’s Kate Carragher at the opening night of 'A Wild Abandon - Awaken the Bear' exhibition.

Kate Carragher is a wildlife creative, artist, science communicator, and sponsored adventurer. Last year, she spent four months in a region dubbed by biologists as the Chilcotin Ark, as well as four weeks travelling in 10 National Parks in the North-West US.

Featuring rugged landscapes from mountains to mirrored lakes, bears to bisons, people and the personal - the exhibition is a hybrid of photographs, pencil illustrations, watercolours, journal entries and story-telling - reflecting on last frontiers and the lessons for home.

Relatively unknown and located three hours from a major grocery store, few places in the world compare to the Upper Chilko River for untamed beauty and for witnessing grizzlies, eagles and the salmon run. It is the home and land of the Tsilhqot'in nation and people.

The bison migration in Yellowstone and the mountains of Banff and Rainier also feature prominently in the works - as does adventure and the amazing characters who live and play in these areas.

The Newcastle Writers Festival Director Rosemarie Milsom will open the exhibition and musician Olivia Green will also debut on the night.

Entry is donation.

Prints and originals will be available for purchase on the night with a percentage of sales going to wildlife organisations / charities connected in with each place or the animal featured. As BC currently battles the largest wildfires on record, with the Cariboo-Chilcotin hit hard, we're currently in discussions with organisations that will be best placed or in greatest need to assist wildlife or causes.

With 10 per cent of the Earth’s wilderness lost in the last two decades, the ‘A Wild Abandon’ series is a lifetime body of work dedicated to exploring remote, pristine, unique and/or vulnerable environments, as well as the link between people and place, adventure and art, solitude and instinct. Awaken the Bear is the first exhibition in the series.

The exhibition is kindly supported by Kathmandu (and us here at The Edwards).
